Does whiskey go bad, short answer: no, not the way milk or wine does. Whiskey has no expiry date, an unopened bottle stored properly lasts indefinitely, and drinking whiskey that has been open for a few years won’t make you ill. What changes is the flavor. Once a bottle is opened, air gets in and the whiskey slowly oxidizes. With the stopper pushed in tight and the bottle at least half full, it should stay unchanged for several months to 2 years. Below: opened and unopened shelf life, bourbon, signs of change, storage and decanters.

Does whiskey go bad?
No. Whiskey doesn’t spoil. In its guide Does Whisky Go Bad?, the Arran whisky distillery explains that whisky doesn’t go sour like milk or turn to vinegar like wine, and that it has no best-before or expiry date. Scotch labels spell it whisky and most American labels say whiskey, but the answer is the same.
What can happen is slower and quieter: the flavor fades. So the real question behind “does whiskey go bad” is not whether the bottle is safe. It is whether the whiskey still tastes the way it did the night you opened it. That depends on two things: whether the seal has been broken, and how much whiskey is left inside.
Does whiskey expire if it is unopened?
No. According to Arran, an unopened bottle stored properly lasts indefinitely, and as long as the seal is intact it can stay in pristine condition for decades. That is why you won’t find a date on the label.
It won’t get better with time, either. Whiskey matures in the wooden cask, not in the glass. The Wikipedia entry on whisky notes that it does not mature in the bottle, so the age on the label is the time between distillation and bottling. A 12-year-old whiskey that sat in a cupboard for another ten years is still a 12-year-old whiskey.
For whiskey shelf life, then, a sealed bottle is the easy case. If you found one at the back of a cabinet or inherited one, check that the seal is unbroken and the cork looks sound. If both are fine, the whiskey inside should be too.
How long does whiskey last once opened?
Several months to 2 years, according to Arran, as long as the stopper is pushed in tight and the bottle is at least half full. After that, the color can fade and the finish can become less smooth.
The reason is air. Once you open a bottle, air reacts with the whiskey and oxidation begins. It is a slow process, not a switch.
Why the level in the bottle matters
The less whiskey in the bottle, the more air sits on top of it. A full bottle with a little air at the neck is in no hurry. The same bottle with two fingers left at the bottom is mostly air, and that is the bottle most likely to taste flat. That is why Arran’s timeline comes with a condition: at least half full.
A simple rule follows from it. Once a bottle drops below half, plan to finish it, or move it into a smaller bottle so there is less air around it.
How long does bourbon last after opening?
The same as any other whiskey. Bourbon is a barrel-aged American whiskey made mainly from corn, so the same rules apply. Unopened, it keeps indefinitely. Opened, expect several months to 2 years with a tight stopper and the bottle at least half full. Rye, Irish whiskey and Scotch follow the same logic.
How to tell if whiskey has changed
Use your nose before your tongue. Pour a small measure into a clean glass and compare it with what you remember. These are the usual signs a bottle has changed:
- A flatter aroma. The smell is weaker or less layered than it was when the bottle was new.
- A muted flavor. The taste is thinner and the finish is shorter or less smooth.
- A faded color. The whiskey looks lighter in the glass than it used to.
- A dried or crumbling cork. Bits of cork in the neck, or a stopper that breaks when you pull it. A cork in that state no longer seals well, so the whiskey has had more air.
One rule overrides the rest: if it smells or tastes off, pour it out. A flat bottle is a judgment call. A bad smell isn’t.
Can you drink whiskey that has been open for years?
Usually, yes. Arran says drinking whisky that has been open for a few years won’t make you ill. With an old open bottle, the risk is a disappointing glass, not a health problem.
So taste it and decide. If it still tastes good to you, drink it. If it tastes flat but not off, it can still go into a mixed drink, where the whiskey doesn’t have to carry the glass on its own. If it smells or tastes wrong in any way, don’t drink it.
How to keep an opened bottle from going flat
Storage slows the change. It doesn’t stop it. Arran’s tips cover the basics:
- Keep it tightly sealed. Push the stopper or screw the cap on firmly after every pour.
- Keep it cool and out of direct sunlight. A closed cabinet beats a sunny shelf.
- Store unopened bottles upright.
- Downsize a bottle that is more than half empty. Transfer it to a smaller bottle to limit oxidation.

Does whiskey go bad in a decanter?
Not quickly, but a decanter is for the bottle in rotation, not for long-term storage. Moving whiskey into a decanter doesn’t change how it tastes. It changes how the bottle looks on the bar. A decanter with a tight glass stopper is a fine home for whiskey you will finish over the next weeks or months.
The same rules apply inside a decanter as inside the bottle. Keep the stopper in, keep it out of the sun and remember that the air inside grows as the level drops. A decanter is not a way to make whiskey last longer.
For a special bottle you want to keep for years, leave it sealed in its original bottle and decant the one you are actually drinking.
Size matters here too. A 750 ml decanter holds one standard bottle, so a full bottle goes in with nothing left over and the decanter starts full rather than part empty. Our whiskey decanter guide explains what a decanter is for, or browse our personalized whiskey decanters.

What to do with the last third of a bottle
Drink it. A bottle that has dropped well below half is the one most exposed to air, so the best way to protect it is to enjoy it while it still tastes the way you liked it.
Pour it neat or over one large cube in a short, heavy rocks glass, or see our guide on how to drink bourbon for other ways to serve it. A low bottle is also a good excuse to have friends over and finish it together.
If the whiskey drinker is someone else, our gifts for whiskey lovers guide has more ideas, and our home bar essentials list covers what else belongs on the shelf. Every engraved piece is made to order, so allow time before the date you need it.
