Whiskey Decanter Sets: What to Look For Before You Buy One Leave a comment

Whiskey decanter set, short answer: a good one is a clear glass decanter with a stopper that actually seals, two glasses with a weighted base that match it, and engraving cut into the glass rather than stuck on. Everything else, the wooden box, the crystal, the whiskey stones, is optional. Most sets under $60 fail on the stopper or the glasses, and most sets over $200 are paying for a brand name. This guide covers what to look for in a whiskey decanter set, what the box is for, what to engrave on it, and the three things that look important on the listing and are not.

What is in a whiskey decanter set

A decanter, usually holding about a bottle’s worth, a stopper, and two or four glasses in the same glass. Some sets add a wooden presentation box, a tray, tongs and whiskey stones. The decanter and the glasses are the set; the rest is packaging. The decanter exists to put the whiskey on display and give it a stopper that seals better than a screw cap, and our whiskey decanter guide covers what it does and does not do to the whiskey inside. This guide is about choosing the set.

1. Whiskey decanter set materials: glass or crystal

Clear glass is the right answer for a decanter that holds whiskey for months at a time. Traditional lead crystal is heavier and sparkles more, and it leaches lead into spirits stored in it for longer than a few days, which is why the old advice was to decant and drink the same evening. Lead-free crystal avoids that and costs more than glass for the same clarity. For a set that will sit on a bar with whiskey in it, premium clear glass is the sensible choice; look for high clarity and a heavy base rather than a crystal label.

2. The stopper is the whole product

A decanter with a loose stopper is a vase. The whiskey oxidises, the room smells of bourbon, and the set goes in a cupboard within a year. Look for a ground-glass stopper that seats with a slight twist, or a glass stopper with a silicone gasket; both seal. Avoid cork-wrapped stoppers on a decanter meant for storage, and avoid any listing that does not show the stopper seated. If you can, tilt the filled decanter over a sink: a good stopper holds.

3. The glasses: two, weighted, matching

Two glasses is the right number for a set. Four is for a bar; six is for a photograph. What matters is that the glasses match the decanter in glass and in engraving, and that they have a weighted base, because a light glass on a heavy decanter looks like two purchases. A rocks glass around ten or eleven ounces is the standard shape; our whiskey glasses guide covers when a tulip or a Glencairn is the better call.

4. Engraving: cut, not stuck

There are three ways a name gets onto a decanter: laser engraving, which cuts into the glass and is permanent; sandblasting, which is also permanent but softer-edged; and vinyl or a printed decal, which peels in the dishwasher. On a listing, the word to look for is “laser engraved” and a close-up photo of the frosted cut. The engraving should be on the decanter and on both glasses, in the same design, or the set does not read as a set.

5. The wooden box, and when it is worth it

A wooden presentation box adds twenty to forty dollars and does two things: it makes the set a gift on the night, and it gives the set somewhere to live if it is not going on a bar. For a wedding, a best man or a father of the bride, the box is worth it, because the unboxing is part of the gift. For a set going straight onto your own bar cart, skip it and spend the difference on the whiskey.

6. Size and shape of a whiskey decanter set

A decanter holding about 750 ml, the size of a standard bottle, is the practical size: one bottle fills it, and it does not sit half empty. The square, heavy-based decanter is the shape that does not tip and takes engraving best, because the flat face gives the laser a flat canvas. Round and globe decanters look striking on the listing and wobble on the shelf. Check the height against the shelf it is going on; most square decanters stand around nine inches with the stopper in.

What to engrave on a whiskey decanter set

  • A couple. Both first names and the wedding date on the decanter, one name on each glass.
  • A groomsman or best man. His name or initials, and the date of the wedding, so the set is from the day rather than from a shop; our groomsmen proposal ideas guide has the wording people actually use.
  • A retirement. Name, the years of service, one line. The retirement gifts guide explains why the line should be short.
  • A client or a company. The logo on the decanter, the client’s initials on the glasses; keep the logo small.

Three things about a whiskey decanter set that do not matter

  • Whiskey stones. They chill a little, dilute nothing, and scratch the glass. A single large ice cube does the job better. A set that leads with the stones is padding the box.
  • “Crystal” in the title. Unless it says lead-free, it is either glass with a marketing word or lead crystal you should not store whiskey in. Judge by clarity and weight.
  • Six glasses. Two get used. The other four get stored, and the set costs more to include them.

Still deciding between a set and a single decanter? Our whiskey decanter guide covers the decanter on its own, and the gifts for bourbon lovers list places the set against the other options.

Whiskey decanter set: FAQ

What should a whiskey decanter set include?

A decanter with a stopper that seals, and two matching glasses. A wooden box is a nice extra for a gift; stones, tongs and trays are packaging.

Is a crystal decanter set better than glass?

Not for storing whiskey. Lead crystal leaches into spirits kept in it for more than a few days. Lead-free crystal or premium clear glass are the choices for a decanter that stays full.

How much should a decanter set cost?

Around $80 to $120 for a glass set with laser engraving and two weighted glasses. Under $50 the stopper or the glasses are usually the compromise; over $200 is mostly brand.

Is a whiskey decanter set a good wedding gift?

Yes, engraved with both names and the date. It is one of the few wedding gifts that goes on display rather than into a cupboard.

Can you put a decanter set in the dishwasher?

Laser-engraved glass is dishwasher safe; vinyl decals are not. Hand-wash the decanter anyway, because the narrow neck does not rinse well in a machine.

How long does whiskey last in a decanter set?

With a stopper that seals, months; a full decanter changes very slowly. A half-empty one changes faster because of the air. The decanter guide covers the timings.
