This guide covers how to use an electric wine opener step by step, why it jams or stalls halfway, what to do with a crumbling cork, and how to make the batteries last.

1. Cut the foil first

The foil cutter in the set is the small round piece with the blades inside. Put it over the top of the bottle, squeeze, turn it half a turn each way, and lift the cap of foil off. Skipping this step is the most common reason an electric opener struggles: the spiral goes through the foil, the foil wraps around the spiral, and the motor works against it. If the set has no cutter, the blade on a waiter’s key does the same job; either way, how to use an electric wine opener begins before the opener touches the bottle. Ten seconds here saves the motor thirty.

2. Set it straight, and hold the bottle

Put the bottle on a table, not in your hand. Set the opener over the neck so the bottle top sits fully inside the opener’s cup and the opener is standing straight up, not leaning. Hold the bottle firmly around the shoulder with your other hand. The single most important thing in how to use an electric wine opener is that the spiral goes into the cork vertically; a tilted opener drives the spiral through the side of the cork, and the cork comes out in pieces or not at all.

3. How to use an electric wine opener: press down until the motor stops

Press and hold the lower button. The spiral turns into the cork, then keeps turning and draws the cork up into the opener. Keep holding the button until the motor changes note and stops on its own; that is the cork fully out and inside the barrel. Do not let go halfway to check, and do not pull the opener upward while the motor runs. The opener does the pulling. On a fresh set of batteries the whole thing takes six or seven seconds.

4. Lift the opener off, then press up

With the cork inside the barrel, lift the whole opener straight off the bottle. Now press and hold the upper button: the spiral turns the other way and the cork drops out of the bottom. Do this over a bin or the table, not over the glass, because a wet cork bounces. If the cork will not release, press the down button for one second to seat it and then the up button again; the spiral sometimes needs a fraction of a turn to free the thread.

5. Pour, and use the stopper

The pourer in the set sits in the neck and stops the drip that runs down the label. The stopper goes in when the bottle goes back; it seals better than the cork ever did, and a bottle stoppered on Tuesday is still good on Thursday. Those two pieces are the reason to buy the set rather than the opener alone; the last step of how to use an electric wine opener well is using them. They are also the reason it makes a better gift for a wine lover than a single gadget.

Why an electric wine opener jams or stalls

  • It was not straight. The spiral went in at an angle and is now pushing against the glass. Press up to back it out, re-seat the opener vertically, and go again.
  • The batteries are low. A motor that slows, whines and stops halfway is almost always low batteries, not a bad cork. Four fresh AAs fix it; the old ones will still run a torch.
  • The foil is still on. The spiral is wrapped in foil and dragging. Back it out, cut the foil, restart.
  • A synthetic cork. Plastic corks grip the spiral harder than natural ones. The opener will still do it, slower; do not help it by pulling. If it stalls at the end, hold the down button a second longer.
  • The cork came out, the spiral is stuck in it. Press up with the opener held upright; if nothing happens, unscrew the cork by hand from the bottom of the barrel.

Old or crumbling corks

An electric opener is good at ordinary corks and bad at old, dry, crumbling ones, because the spiral needs the cork to hold together while it lifts. On a bottle older than fifteen years, or any cork that looks dry at the top after the foil comes off, use a two-pronged “ah-so” opener or a waiter’s key with a slow, steady pull instead. If you have already started and the cork breaks, push the rest into the bottle with the handle of a wooden spoon and decant through a strainer; our guide to opening wine without a corkscrew covers that and the other emergencies.

Batteries and care

Most electric openers, including ours, run on four AA batteries rather than a charger; the up side is nothing to plug in and no charger to lose, the down side is that a low set of batteries is the cause of most “it stopped working” complaints. Keep four spares in the stand. Take the batteries out if the opener is going into a cupboard for the summer. Wipe the spiral with a damp cloth after a red; do not put the opener in the dishwasher or under a tap, because the motor is in the handle. The history of the corkscrew runs from the 1700s to the electric version; the electric one is the first that does not require a technique, which is the whole point of it.
